Just got back from the dress rehearsal of the Tory Burch show. I got a quick interview with Tory and here's what she had to say:

“I wanted to give a free spirit look to the spring collection, one that’s lived in, but not completely. My favorite outfit is the sequin dress, I wore it during the VMA’s and it was very comfortable and sophisticated.”

I just got back from the Baby Phat show and surprise, surprise...the clothing was actually pretty nice (all things considered of course). The theme was Moroccan Kiss and the clothing was laced with brightly colored dresses, blouses, knits and swimwear. The looks were dripping in gold jewelry and accessories.

Ports 1961 was all about glamour this season as they presented sheathes with huge glass necklaces and feminine pleated detailing. Bits of floral was dispersed throughout. My personal fav: pleated rompers.

Alicia Piller has designed many things—bags, paintings, and even candy boxes. But her most prized possession has been the birth of her own business, Designs by Alicia P.

It all started four years ago when Alicia was laid off from an unfulfilling design job. Realizing that she could make more money doing what she loved, she decided to launch a line of paintings, suede & beaded jewelry, and hand-painted clothing; all made by Alicia P. herself.

But she didn’t stop there.

Each garment has intricately arranged letters, shapes and lines…on washable fabric paint. And her jewelry intertwines crystals and semi-precious beads creating lightweight suede works of art. “My works appeals to literally everyone—the young and the old,” says Alicia.

Feathers
Make lots of room in your closet this season—feathers are taking over and flying with style. Anna Sui was one of the many designers who added touches of feathers to her collection, balancing romantic florals and brightly colored legwear.

Wide Leg
If you’re tired of skinny jeans, fall 09 is the perfect season for a welcomed change. The Oscar de la Renta and Ossie Clark collections added hints of flare with satin wide leg pants and jumpsuits. Pair with fitted belted cropped jackets, and satin ruffled tops for sophisticated bliss.

Shorts - Hot Pants
Hot pants don’t exactly scream the “go anywhere” look, but this fall, Giles Deacon and Phillip Lim have managed to dispel those myths. Hot shorts and pants for fall are paired with colorful tights and leggings, offering a combination of naughty sassiness. If you’re really daring, rock your tiny shorts with thigh high boots.

Neons
Michael Kors set our hearts on fire with bold lime colored dresses, while Marc Jacobs opted for wallpaper inspired tights. And who could forget Malandrino’s hot pink skirts?

Ruffles
Sass & Bide designers Sarah Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton have always been a tad unconventional, but this season they rocked the house with rock ‘n’ roll inspired pieces with touches of ruffles for added femininity. Included in the mix of ruffled lovers are Tracy Reese as she showcased ruffled short-sleeve sweaters, and Douglas Hannant’s ruffled Poiret collar blouses.

Fashion Week Nail Trends

From sheer, smoky silvers to popping pomegranate plums, nail trends for fall ‘09 leave room for wearers to gracefully express their personalities. According to nail maven Noni Crème from Butter London, her polish choice this fall is nude. At the Lela Rose show she proclaimed “We will be leaving dark nails in the dust!” as she used Swinger, an antique gold shade with a slight green content to give the nails a “wet” look. However, despite her prediction there was an assortment of dark colors present throughout the shows, including at the Vena Cava show, where Crème laquered up the models in British Racing Green - a dark, bold greenish shade set to launch exclusively on Beauty.com this Fall.

Dark colors were used as accessories this go-around and were present in the majority of shows. Chris Benz used Lancome’s “Declaring Indigo” collection (set to launch this Fall), filled with dark blues, golds and red shades. And Monique L’ Huiller combined Essie’s Aruba Blue and Licorice to give a penetrating dark glow.

Dashing Diva followed the dark trend while offering an array of deep shades with hints of lighter tones sprinkled throughout courtesy of manicurist Alisha Rimando. Jillian Lewis showcased Carrie-d Away, a peachy pink shade on fingernails but darkened the toes up a tad with City that never Sleeps an opaque, midnight blackberry. Erin Fetherston and Charlotte Ronson shared Dashing Diva’s Jet Set - a dark, burgundy frost, while Lorick opted for Central Park After Dark, a crème plum noir, and Catherine Holstein’s models sported Mulberry Street a dark, vampy burgundy frost. Bold and nudes were combined yesterday at Trovata, where we saw a new twist on the classic French manicure, a combination of West Village and She E.O. with Limo Service at the tip.

So whether your layering colors or wearing alone, captivate your personality down to your fingertips with bold shades and nude tones.

To re-create the look at Trovata, simply follow these five steps:
1. Polish all nails with True Color Base coat.
2. Polish all nails with West Village.
3. Polish all nails with She.E.O.
4. Use Limo Service just at the edge of the nail and lean the brush slightly onto the surface of the nail to achieve a 1/16″ black edge on the nail.
5. Cover all nails with True Color Topcoat.

The spring season may be a month away, but ic! berlin's newest sunglasses will make you want to look like a solar god(dess) stat.

Last night I headed over to a preview of Twinkle by Wenlan’s fall '09 collection and experienced a fusion of exaggerated chains, beads, geometric patterns and relaxed and roomy blouses. The sweaters were very flirty and the waistlines were high and tight.

And to top it off, the collection was a union of classic style and the 21st Century age of hybrid modernity. I’m totally not a car-lover but I must say the Porsche’s and Ferrari’s were to die for!

M.A.C Make Up trends:
-The goal for fall '09 is to achieve a 'hard edge' look.
- The look is simple: a black band across the top eyelid with a light shading on the temple.
- The liner used is called smoulder
- Studio Sculpt foundation is very popular this season

Nail Trends:
- Rita Hazan Salon did all the nails for the models. The 1st coat is Essie Aruba Blue, the 2nd is Essie's Licorice

Hair Trends:
- The look is a low ponytail chignon. The inspiration is taken from a ballerina look. However, the look is the ballerina heading home, not to the performance. The look is clean, yet lived in. The goal is to find a balance of clean and non-perfection.

In the spring of 2008, Marie Jean Baptiste stumbled upon something in her Brooklyn neighborhood that changed her life—a going out of business fabric and yarn store. Marie immediately took advantage of the deeply discounted merchandise and purchased tons of yarn. “When I finally got home, I didn’t know what I wanted to make,” said Marie. “I just wrapped the colorful yarn around some earrings and things just started coming together.”

A few months and ideas later, Marie birthed Funky Lobes, a jewelry line filled with handcrafted yarn earrings, bangles and necklaces. Exploring new colors and fashion trends are important to Marie, and since her debut last year, she has upgraded to imported yarns from Italy.

Within her jewelry collection you’ll find an array of multi-shaped pieces daunting gorgeous palettes. Although the pieces are easy on the eyes, the process for making the jewelry is no easy task. Aside from using her strength to tightly wrap the yarn, Marie uses three glues for binding purposes. “It’s a long process,” says Marie. But it’s a task she embraces.

“There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on new outfits when you can spice up your already owned pieces with one of our fabulous pieces,” said Marie.

So what’s up next for the fashionable gal? Marie is planning to create a collection of yarn handbags and provide a small collection of vintage dresses for Marie’s Closet, a clothing rental boutique for industry professionals—another endeavor Marie has up her sleeve.

It’s Official: Michelle Obama in VOGUE Mag!

Next month, Michelle Obama will hit the stands in Vogue Magazine. Following Hillary Clinton, Michelle is the second First Lady to grace the cover. It’s not confirmed what exactly she’ll wear, but we do know she’ll be flaunting Jason Wu. The Washington Post reports:

In the cover photo, taken by Annie Leibovitz, Obama is leaning on a soft beige sofa at the Hay Adams Hotel, where the first family stayed days before the historic inauguration. Obama is wearing a magenta dress by designer Jason Wu, who designed her inaugural ball gown. Her hand rests under her chin. Her left hand folded beneath her. She is wearing a diamond that you do not often see her wearing in recent appearances.

Honestly, the last few articles in Vogue have been rather lackluster. So, Michelle will add a bit of color…literally.

Hairstylist Rahni Flowers is the man standing behind the first lady...literally.
Since Michelle Obama was 18, Rahni Flowers has been managing her tresses, making sure her look is always up to par. In his recent interview with Rachel Ray, Flowers discusses Inauguration style preparations and even offers tips on how to score the first lady look.
Rachael asked if he will continue to work with Michelle now that she's away from his Chicago salon and in Washington D.C. Flowers then stated: "It would not be a very pragmatic thing to fly me back and forth to Washington D.C. in light of the economic climate in the United States." Instead, he's training people who live in D.C. to maintain her look and her schedule.
How's that for a savvy stylist who isn't afraid of saving a buck or two. I'll take him!

Poor Kors...

yesyerday, the Tony Duquette brand filed suit against Michael Kors for trademark infringement and other causes of action. The brand believes the Project Runway star infringed the Duquette proprietary name and trademark by producing and marketing a Kors Resort Collection using the name Duquette.

The weird/crazy part is that designer Tony Duquette, died almost 10 years ago and the company is now in the hands of business partner Hutton Wilkinson. Who knew?!

On Jan. 21, the board of directors for Charlotte Russe Holding Inc. announced that it was considering selling its company. Board Chairman Jennifer Salopek said Charlotte Russe had “received interest from unnamed buyers” but, there is no schedule for a possible sale.

I don’t shop at Charlotte Russe, unless I need a quick top or summertime skirt, but I’d hate to see another company go under. I suppose it’s just another sign of the times.

H&M is turning over a new leaf…at least in Barcelona. H&M gave Estudio Mariscal permission to do a complete architectural reconstruction, interior design with furnishing and lighting. One might say it’s a bit over the top for cheap clothes, but I say why not? It’s super fab and definitely puts H & M on the map of chicness.

Bittersweet Feelings

While attending Intermezzo last week, I stumbled upon Dogeared jewels and gifts. Dogeared is filled with lovely jewelry, but most important, the California-based company loves to spread positive energy into the world with personal and positive gifts.

After interviewing the sales rep, she offered me a super cute ‘make a wish necklace’. She told me if I wanted to bring love and magic into my life, (something we ALL need) all I have to do is make a wish when I put on the necklace, and when the necklace wears off, my wish is ready to come true!

So naturally as soon my foot hit my apartment door, I ran into the bathroom and put on my new BFF. I’m so happy to have this little guy, but I must say when it falls off (it will, it’s made of tobacco silk thread), I’m going to be rather disappointed. Buuuut, there’s a part of me that just wants to rip it off so my secret wish can come true…now!

It seems that Pharrell (and Kanye West for that matter) has gone back to the 70’s—the days when Ron Isley and Rick James wore jumpsuits on the regular. And his new BBC/Ice Cream line, complete with one piece jumpsuits for men, is no exception.

I’m seriously intrigued to discover what’s next on the horizon? Perhaps a onesie that snaps on the bottom? Or maybe monistat for men, because after wearing this for a few days some damage is bound to occur. (Sigh) But, to be honest there is a market for it—gay men have been wearing similar gear for quite some time. But, I thought the term was fashion forward, not fashion backwards. What do you think?

Industry Profile: Paige Adams-Geller, Owner & Designer of Paige Premium Denim

We all know the fashion industry is tough to break into; in fact, it can be quite daunting and nerve-wracking. So, in addition to covering style trends, industry events, and popular looks for less, I'm also interviewing leaders in the industry (editors, designers, stylists, etc.) for a series that offers advice and tips on how to get your feet wet and leap into the industry. Not only will you get the facts on how they got their foot in the door, and what they love most about their jobs, but some of the challenges they face and how young fashionistas like you can snag a job just like theirs.

First on my list of go-getters is Paige Adams-Geller, owner and designer of Paige Premium Denim. Although Paige is currently on vacation, she was kind enough to answer a few questions and offer a few words of wisdom for all you budding designers out there.

Growing up in Alaska, Paige Adams-Geller never thought in a million years she’d become a fit model. But with years of endurance, Paige has become the industry's secret weapon as denim labels everywhere shape their jeans around the woman with the most revered ‘bum’.

For years, Paige worked as a fit-model in LA; but that all changed when she met designer Jerome Dahan who launched the Seven jeans label using Paige's perfect derrière as his foundation. Shortly thereafter, Paige became the denim industry's it-girl, as she had bookings for fittings five days a week.

Now officially retired as a fit model, Paige is now designing her own jeans and for her, fit is still majorly important. In fact, she still tries on EVERY single pair of Paige jeans before it hits shelves.

“Fit is everything,” she says. “I'm sure we've all had the experience of trying on a pair of jeans that looked great on the rack but looked terrible on. No matter how great the wash is or how cute the cut looks on the hanger, if they don't fit well they aren't leaving the store.”

Her biggest advice for designers bubbling with creativity who desire to be successful:

“Don't compromise your vision. Even if what you're doing, thinking, or designing goes against the grain, stay with it. If you stick to designing what you believe in, you'll find success. I ran into a lot of naysayers, but as difficult as it was, I stayed true to my ideas and it's never steered me wrong.”

And if you’re looking to break into the industry as a model, but slightly over-weight Paige says:

“I really found my success in being a ‘real’ figure instead of a coat hanger. For girls of any size who aspire to model, the best thing to do is to find your market and don't quit. There is a market for EVERY size and shape: fuller, smaller, shorter and taller. Find an agency that works with your figure type. There are even agencies for pregnant models!”

Thanks a bunch Paige for your lovely words of advice! And it’s so true! The best thing for aspiring models is to find a market that best represents you and never give up. So many of us quit when the going gets tough, but if we stay true to our desires and passions, success will be knocking on our doors in no time.

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the NY Women’s Chamber of Commerce’s Holiday Party at La Pregunta Arts Café. Not only was it great to be around such beautiful and prominent ladies, but everyone brought unwrapped toy for a disadvantaged child in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. While I was there, I noticed a few ladies had on super cute camisoles and it reminded me of the new innerwear and outerwear trend. Wintour to Retire?

The ~~Queen B.~~ Editor in Chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour, might be leaving. According to Page Six, an insider reported “Her contract is up soon; she feels she's done it all and had enough.”

Wintour turned 59 last month and Grace Mirabella—former Vogue editor—left the magazine at 59. So, in all actuality the idea of Wintour retiring isn’t exactly far fetched.

Humm…

Anyway, on a different note, she was awarded an Order of the British Empire for "services to British journalism and fashion in America" at Buckingham Palace last week.

The Angels are Back!

Tim Gunn Raves About Tide

I swore I wouldn't become one of those women who are ultra picky and particular about certain things, but I must admit, I have a new crush and it entails something as minute as laundry!

A few days ago I attended the launch party for Tide and Downy Total Care at New York City's Empire Hotel Rooftop. While parlaying around, I ran into Tim Gunn. I chatted him up a bit and he absolutely RAVED about Tide. Not only did he say it was perfect for regular tops and bottoms, but also intimate apparel.

Remembering that I ran out of laundry detergent a few days before, I immediately grabbed some on my way home—especially after being immersed in all the hoopla by the industry’s number one man.

And I’m so glad I did.

I’m such in a good mood today. Why? Because The Vanity Fair 2008 best-dressed list came out this week and Michelle Obama topped the list. The magazine even called presidential hopeful Barack Obama's wife their "commander-in-sheath."

Honestly, my personal favorite was the purple dress by Maria Pinto that she wore with a black Azzedine Alaia belt on the campaign trail in Minnesota last month, it screamed brilliance.

According to "Page Six", Andre Leon Talley might have a bit of credit problems…

Andre Leon Talley had a tough time buying underpants recently. The 6-foot-8 Vogue editor at large was in Macy's picking out XXL Calvin Klein thongs, but was thwarted when he tried to open a store credit-card account, our spy said. "He was denied and had trouble paying for it and had to come back . . . it was a big fiasco," the source said. Vogue spokes man Patrick O'Connell con firmed Talley was in Macy's, but insisted he was buying Polo boxers - not thongs. He declined to discuss the credit flap.

Black is Beautiful

Thanks to Vogue editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani recognizing the lack of black faces at Fashion Week in February, the July Italian VOGUE issue will feature pictures of ONLY black models, and will include articles on black women in the arts and entertainment industries.

Now if we can only get American Vogue to follow suit! Which by the way has only had 34 black women—most of them models—on its cover in its 116-year history.

The magazine will have four available covers with models Liya Kebede, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn and Naomi Campbell.

Making a Splash at Splashlight Studios

After fine-tuning his fur skills as Design Director for Ann Dee Goldin of fur house Goldin Feldman, Orlando Lopez partnered with fashion stylist Felix Fletcher and started their own label in March ‘06. But now, the duo (which, by the way are very cute) have a ready to wear collection that’s non-fur, perfect for the chic uptown woman (such as myself) and the edgy downtown girl. The new RTW collection is filled with cocktail dresses, pants, blouses in hints of metallic and bold hues like electric blue and auburn orange.

Tonight marked the debut for the fall/winter ‘08/’09 RTW collection that was on display at the Splashlight Studios’ new Soho location. And with a combination of live models and cocktails courtesy of Ty-Ku and H2O courtesy of SmartWater, the event was glamorous, beautiful, and most of all, unforgettable.

I’m screaming with delight as I'm STILL on cloud 9 from my amazing trip to Punta Cana with my three favorite girls! It was amazingly relaxing and breathtakingly gorgeous—especially when I thought of all the fun you guys were having in all the cold. (smiles!)

But seriously, not only were the Dominican people delightful, but they were so laid back and very accepting. So after day three when I realized the DR was no fashion show, and no one cared if our outfits were chic, please believe I let my (short) hair down and reveled in the warm sun!

To add a bit of sun to our otherwise cold winter day, I’m giving a break down of a few of my favorite suits for the season!

LEFT- Brand New Swimwear company, Graffinis uses photographic imagery taken from the streets of NYC and engineers them directly into the cut of each swimsuit. Most unique are the themes that range from graffitied walls, to street signs, ATMs and phone booths.

RIGHT- T. Santiago is really lingerie, but because it’s made from unique water-resistant fabrics from South America and Europe, it doubles as swimwear.

Fashion Rations Honors Black History Month Pt. 2

Influenced by his godmother, who had designed and made clothes for jazz singers Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, African American fashion designer Scott Barrie began designing in 1966.

Barrie graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art and the Mayer School in New York, and although his mother was not initially encouraging about his future in fashion designing for Seventh Avenue, Barrie continued to follow is dream in fashion.

Known for his draped jersey and chiffon styles, Barrie established himself as a designer of sexy, often outrageous clothes. His eveningwear was particularly noteworthy: skinny gowns sprinkled with high splits, or jersey slips that sexily slid over the figure.

In 1993 Barrie died of brain cancer in Alessandria, Italy

at the age of 52.

Fashion Rations Honors Black History Month!

In Lieu of Black History Month, I thought it would nice to give a special tribute to one of the most successful African American fashion designers, Willi Smith. Although his clientele included wealthy and prominent people, his principal aim was to design clothing that was stylish and affordable for the average person. In fact he even once said: "I don't design clothes for the Queen, but for the people who wave at her as she goes by."

Sadly, Willi is no longer with us—he died unexpectedly in 1987 after contracting AIDS—but his wonderful memory still lives on.

A few of his awards include:

Two scholarships to attend Parsons School of Design in 1965.
The Coty American Fashion Critics' Award for women's fashion (1983).
The Cutty Sark Award for Men's Fashion in 1985.
Honored with a bronze plaque for Fashion Walk of Fame along Seventh Avenue in 2000-2002.

Getting Clean and Being Seen

When most people think of high-fashion, fabric softner doesn’t usually come to mind; in fact, whenever I need to wash my nice pieces, I either A.) head straight for the dry cleaners or B.) haphazardly hand wash my goodies in Soak. But, after attending Downy and GenArt’s event that showcased Downy’s new Radiance Collection, I am now a bonifide believer of softener!

But more importantly, last night’s event at Earth (116A 10^th Ave.) was super sexy as it highlighted thee designers (Laura Miller, Jerry Tam and Khary Septh) that will create looks inspired by the Radiance Collection’s scents of amethyst mist, turquoise frost, or pink opal. And as a special introduction, attendees got to view a runway show filled with the designers pre-existing designs.

And of course I was there with my camera in tow trying to get the hottest pictures for you guys, but naturally my camera died as soon as the show started. But, here’s an idea of all the hype…

The Definition of Style

Sugarplums, today officially kicks off Day One of Coterie! And for those of you who have no idea, for me ENK tradeshows can be more exciting that NY Fashion Week because it’s more intimate and its comprised of both established names and the young avant garde’s of fashion.

This year, Coterie is held at The Show Piers and the Javits Center, so you know what that means: jumping from one building to the next in the bitter, bitter cold. But anything for my loves. Here’s a tidbit from today…

Remember that lovely shoe company I ran into at the Gen Art event in December (refer to Dec. 5 posting) Well, Dru New York was in the house again and this year there fall styles are supper sophisticated. Sadly, I wasn’t able to snag a pair—or two—but she was gracious enough to let me linger in her booth and ogle over her shoes. My favorite: the flat boot in black, that’s complete with a front lace-up and zippered back.

Don’t you agree that a woman can never have enough Rag and Bone shirts and sweaters to complete her classic work wear look? I mean, there’s nothing better than a black wool tailcoat coupled with a white chamberlain shirt and a black twill RBW8 pant. Rag and Bone simply screams classic chic, so when I caught a glimpse of their booth, you know I ran over quick fast and in a hurry. According to the spokesperson, inspirations for the coming seasons include: pretty, military and futuristic.

Other favorites from the show included:

1. Foot Petals, the original designer shoe cushions that are designed for every woman who has a love/hate relationship with her shoes. So now women everywhere can step in style with flower-shaped ball-of-foot cushions that hide perfectly under your foot. Brilliant!

2. Cyrus. This knitwear company has tons of sweaters for every types of woman, but I love their new silk wool blend styles that are super soft and even come with removable sleeves. It’s not listed on their website yet, because the style is for the upcoming season, but look out for style # 53881, it surpassed all my expectations.

Tracy Reese Works Her Magic

Ranking as one of the fashion industry's most successful African-American women, Tracy Reese flaunted her latest fall collections at Fashion Week with figure-flattering strapless dresses with nipped waists, pleats with built-in crinoline and 1950’s dresses modernized with metallics and black and white floral printed fabrics.

According to the UK edition of Vogue, Tracy stated: "We're moved by the elements, our emotions, the weather. You know, if the sun's out I'm happy; if it's rainy I feel stormy inside. So it just seemed appropriate and was a nice emotional connection to the collection."

Colors included kelly greens, pastels and an assortment of beautiful lilacs.

Old Navy Gets New

Rumor has it, Old Navy is making serious moves to launch a new line this summer that not only appeals to the 20 something crowd, but will be priced a bit cheaper than its competitors.

As it stands, the safari-inspired clothing (entitled Urban Explorer line) will include pull-over safari mini-dresses, and a black and white, African-inspired striped wrap.

And, in a push to move away from performance fleeces/preppy plaid tops, Old Navy is coming up with a brand new logo that will hopefully freshen up their new look.

So look out H&M, Todd Oldham is giving ya a run for your money!

Dashing Through WWD Brings Back Memories

While flipping through the January issue of WWD intimates today, I happened to come across a story that highlighted Stacy Dash’s new lingerie line, Letters of Marque. The article discussed a bit about her appearance at Salon de la Lingerie in Paris (which, but the way I would’ve killed to attend), but most importantly it brought back a bit of nostalgia as I remembered meeting her last year at Lingerie Americas.

Not only was the line breathtakingly cute, but she is ultra nice and sooo beautiful. Who knew that after a few kids and a broke-down marriage, Stacey would still look like a super sexy 25 year-old? AND who knew Letters of Marque would be sweet and sophisticated just like her?

Industry Profile: Paige Adams-Geller, Owner & Designer of Paige Premium Denim

We all know the fashion industry is tough to break into; in fact, it can be quite daunting and nerve-wracking. So, in addition to covering style trends, industry events, and popular looks for less, I'm also interviewing leaders in the industry (editors, designers, stylists, etc.) for a series that offers advice and tips on how to get your feet wet and leap into the industry. Not only will you get the facts on how they got their foot in the door, and what they love most about their jobs, but some of the challenges they face and how young fashionistas like you can snag a job just like theirs.

First on my list of go-getters is Paige Adams-Geller, owner and designer of Paige Premium Denim. Although Paige is currently on vacation, she was kind enough to answer a few questions and offer a few words of wisdom for all you budding designers out there.

Growing up in Alaska, Paige Adams-Geller never thought in a million years she’d become a fit model. But with years of endurance, Paige has become the industry's secret weapon as denim labels everywhere shape their jeans around the woman with the most revered ‘bum’.

For years, Paige worked as a fit-model in LA; but that all changed when she met designer Jerome Dahan who launched the Seven jeans label using Paige's perfect derrière as his foundation. Shortly thereafter, Paige became the denim industry's it-girl, as she had bookings for fittings five days a week.

Now officially retired as a fit model, Paige is now designing her own jeans and for her, fit is still majorly important. In fact, she still tries on EVERY single pair of Paige jeans before it hits shelves.

“Fit is everything,” she says. “I'm sure we've all had the experience of trying on a pair of jeans that looked great on the rack but looked terrible on. No matter how great the wash is or how cute the cut looks on the hanger, if they don't fit well they aren't leaving the store.”

Her biggest advice for designers bubbling with creativity who desire to be successful:

“Don't compromise your vision. Even if what you're doing, thinking, or designing goes against the grain, stay with it. If you stick to designing what you believe in, you'll find success. I ran into a lot of naysayers, but as difficult as it was, I stayed true to my ideas and it's never steered me wrong.”

And if you’re looking to break into the industry as a model, but slightly over-weight Paige says:

“I really found my success in being a "real" figure instead of a coat hanger. For girls of any size who aspire to model, the best thing to do is to find your market and don't quit. There is a market for EVERY size and shape: fuller, smaller, shorter and taller. Find an agency that works with your figure type. There are even agencies for pregnant models!”

Thanks a bunch Paige for your lovely words of advice! And it’s so true! The best thing for aspiring models is to find a market that best represents you and never give up. So many of us quit when the going gets tough, but if we stay true to our desires and passions, success will be knocking on our doors in no time.

Just in time for the Christmas season, off-price fashion e-tailer, Bluefly.com, opened a holiday store at Underground-NYC located at 1031 Avenue of the Americas. (not too far from 29^th Street)

According to Women’s Wear Daily, the new shop features Via Spiga coats, Prada boots, Tod’s, Fendi, Ferragamo, Fendi, Yves Saint Laurent, Monclear and much more. And the best part: every week, a different company rents the space, so you never know what to expect! And even if you’re too busy now to stop by, the brick-and-mortar store will hang around through the end of next month.

btw…This isn’t bluefly’s first foray into opening a store front, and something tells me it won’t be the last.

Shopping the Night Away

Happy Hump Day!

My, my, my! I just got back from the ultra-amazing Shop NYC event that showcased accessories and clothing of emerging fashion designers, and boy was it SO much fun. Sponsored by GEN ART—an arts & entertainment organization dedicated to supporting emerging talent in film, fashion and music—Shop NYC was packed to the hilt as it promoted the best of the best.

Within 10 minutes of entering the building I knew I was in trouble. The designers were so nice and best of all everything was discounted! As I stopped at one of the first tables, I met shoe designer Tiffany Chantra whose shoes made bold statements of wit and attitude. When I saw her smiling face and gorgeous $40 brown/teal pump, I nearly threw my wallet at her! They were to dye for. Needless to say after swooning over them for 20 minutes, they rode the subway home with me.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, Shop NYC made sure there wasn’t a dry mouth in the house as they provided beverages courtesy of Baileys, Budweiser Select, Johnnie Walker and Imperia Vodka. (yum!)Too bad as the evening wore on I became a bit tired, because if momma had a bit more energy, I would’ve relished in the complimentary hair styling by Ecru New York and brow grooming by Tweezerman.

Who could forget the beautiful DJ Kiss spinning on the 1’s and 2’s the entire evening? I was so memorized by her quick-spinning hand I just had to take a picture for my lovely fashion rationers. If anyone needs a banging DJ for a party or celebration DJ Kiss is definitely your woman.

I know everyone couldn’t attend, but the good news is everyone can sign up to be a GEN ART member (or just join the mailing list at www.genart.org ) and receive updates on ALL their shindigs. It’s all about supporting up-and-coming designers, right? And as Elle magazine said “When a brand new star is born, chances are GEN ART has something to do with it.”

D&G Expansion on Madison Ave.!

Hi Ya!
I was so, so excited to visit designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s refurbished and expanded NY flagship at 825-827 Madison Ave. today, but when I arrived, sadly it wasn’t open to the public. Although I’m sure in a few days, the 12,960-square-foot store will be bubbling over with Manhattan shoppers, but there’s nothing like a quick tour on the first day. (Ahh…nothing like the smell of a new clothing store)

According to today's Women’s Wear Daily, D&G has two special bag projects for spring ’08 that are priced approximately $40,000 per bag. (Gasp!) But, if you’re feeling animalistic—the bags are made of antique brocades, crocodile and python—or if you desire a bit of exclusivity, go for it.

So much for my trek in the freezing cold, but oh well, that just ensures a better visit for next time...

ACE Honors Marc for Attention or Fashion Homage?

Marc Jacobs, the crazy designer we love to hate and hate to love, has been honored Designer of the Year by the Accessories Council at the 11th Annual ACE (Accessories Council Excellence) Awards.

In receiving the extra attention that Mr. Marc absolutely loves, (In a recent NY Times article, Jacobs stated: “Coming from a psychological place, what I love more than anything is attention.”) I wonder if the non-profit ACE is feeding into his dire need for media attention, or if they were truly honoring his oversized accessories, empire waists, and girly dresses.

Either way, congrats Marc! Maybe this will inspire you to start fashion shows on time…

Bras and Feathers and Wings Oh My!

There’s just something about the infamous Victoria’s Secret Fashion show that draws me in every single year. I don’t know if it’s the anticipation to see how V S will top themselves with their latest Fantasy Bra, the celebrity appearances, or the flying models that drop from the ceiling perfectly synchronized with the music, but either way I tune in every year and 2007 will be no exception. Besides, who wouldn’t be up seeing the Spice Girls first television appearance since they reunited?! Oh nostalgia!

Take a peek at the behind the scenes video. It’s so crazy how brutal the industry can be, even when you’re a 6 foot, size 2 beauty queen with a flawless personality. I guess being a Vicky Secret model is all about odd perfection.

We all know the world of fashion is HUGE and in order to fully grasp its existence and complete understanding it needs to be given in pieces—or rations as I like to say—so it doesn’t seem so massive and enormous.

So sit back and relax as I take you on a tour of my thoughts and opinions on fashion, style and industry trends. Sure you have your own perception of fashion, but wouldn’t it become more refined with a healthy ration of weekly fashion tidbits?
